History of Hotel Gajoen

Hotel Gajoen was built in 1932 and is considered one of the first construction projects of the New Tokyo era. Designed by architect Tokuma Katayama, it is known for its Western-style facade and Japanese-style interior. Originally built as a wedding venue, it was later transformed into a hotel.

This hotel was built at the request of Heikichi Matsukawa, the president of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation. Heikichi was very rich and wanted to build a luxurious wedding hall for his daughter’s wedding. He commissioned Katayama Tokuma to design it, and construction began in 1930. The hotel was completed in 1932 with a total construction cost of 3 million yen.

The hotel was named “Gajoen” after Tohaku Hasegawa’s famous Japanese painting “Kakibatake”. The hotel’s logo is based on this painting, and the hotel’s name is a combination of the first two letters of the painting’s title.

This hotel was originally built as a wedding hall and was one of the first in Tokyo to host Western-style weddings. Eventually, it became popular among the upper class and was reborn as a hotel.

In 2006, it underwent a large-scale renovation and reopened as a tourist destination. Today, it is a popular tourist destination for its unique architecture and history.
