The Story of Osechi
Ancient Beginnings
Osechi Ryori dates back to the **Heian Period (794–1185)**. Originally, these were offerings made to the gods to celebrate the turning of the seasons. Over centuries, it evolved into a special feast enjoyed at the start of the New Year.
A “Break” from Cooking
Traditionally, it was taboo to use fire to cook during the first three days of the New Year to avoid disturbing the gods. Osechi dishes are prepared in advance to be preserved, allowing everyone to rest during the holidays.
